How bad was heroin detox for you, honestly?

I keep putting off getting clean because I'm scared of the withdrawal after everything I've heard. For those who've actually gone through heroin detox, how bad was it really, and did it match what you expected going in?

It was worse in the first 48 hours than I expected and then better than I expected after that. The nausea and stomach cramps hit hard starting around hour 10, and day 2 was when I felt like I couldn't get comfortable no matter what position I tried. By day 5 the physical stuff had mostly faded, though the low mood and trouble sleeping stuck around for a few more weeks.

Honestly the anticipation was worse than the actual detox for me. I white knuckled the first three days at home and it was miserable, sweating through sheets and barely eating, but a medical detox the second time around made a huge difference with the nausea and sleep. Wish I had gone that route the first time instead of trying to do it alone.
